Interdisciplinary artist,\u00a0Sheinina Lolita Raj,\u00a0<\/strong>will\u00a0take a\u00a0deeper dive into\u00a0INTERCULTURAL,\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

an immersive art experience by\u00a0Raj<\/strong>\u00a0and a sound collaboration by\u00a0Nelly Furtado<\/strong>, with an Art Talk <\/span><\/p>\n

on\u00a0Friday, December 8 at the\u00a0Miami Design Preservation League\u2019s Art Deco Museum. The casual <\/span><\/p>\n

conversation between the\u00a0artist and moderator will\u00a0discuss the inner workings of the artwork which <\/span><\/p>\n

is currently on display through December 30.<\/span><\/p>\n

INTERCULTURAL is a visual and sound art experience exploring cultural differences while analyzing <\/span><\/p>\n

the increasing obsolescence of race-based identity. The exhibition features photographs of artist Raj <\/span><\/p>\n

arrayed in the traditional authentic finery of various regions and nations while sounds pieces by <\/span>Nelly Furtado <\/span><\/p>\n

explore new territory featuring Solfeggio Frequencies, frequencies that allow the mind and body to achieve a <\/span><\/p>\n

greater sense of balancing and deep healing.<\/span><\/p>\n

with photographer Sheinina Lolita Raj, whose photographs tackle both subjects unflinchingly. In the <\/span><\/p>\n

midst of her collaborative exhibit, INTERCULTURAL, Raj and a moderator discuss the motivations<\/span><\/p>\n

behind her work. After the chat, walk through the installation, which features a sonic aspect created by <\/span><\/p>\n

People are always asking Sheinina Lolita Raj where she\u2019s from.<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s often the first question she gets from a stranger, and it\u2019s a complicated one to answer. <\/span><\/p>\n

Her father is Indian. Her mother is English. Raj was born in the U.K. and raised in Canada. <\/span><\/p>\n

And throughout her life, people have assumed she\u2019s Mexican, Armenian or Persian, <\/span><\/p>\n

among other ethnicities.<\/span><\/p>\n

This confusion \u2014 sometimes spurred by curiosity, other times by enmity toward her <\/span><\/p>\n

actual or perceived ethnic origins \u2014 has followed her since age eight, but came to a head <\/span><\/p>\n

when she moved to Los Angeles about 16 years ago, despite the city\u2019s reputation for being <\/span><\/p>\n

ethnically and racially diverse, inclusive and cosmopolitan.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I moved to L.A., I guess had this idea in my mind that Los Angeles is a giant city and <\/span><\/p>\n

it\u2019s a metropolis and it has cultures [from] all over the world,\u201d says Raj. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI immediately was so much struck by the obvious racism that\u2019s just present. \u2026 Nowhere have <\/span><\/p>\n

I ever experienced it so bluntly and aggressively and often.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Her experiences taught her that \u201cyou can\u2019t run from racism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
